Sara Russell

Attorney Sara Russell joined the CEO Team after spending the foundational years of her career as a District Attorney, with the 5th Judicial District's District Attorneys' Office. Sara brings a wealth of criminal defense experience to the firm, having learned each side of the system from her time as a prosecutor. Sara also worked as a Staff Attorney with the Judicial Arbiter's Group, Colorado's foremost organization of former and retired judges, now working as neutral third party mediators and arbitrators.

Sara is a resident of Clear Creek County, where she resides with her family. Sara brings years of experience to the CEO Team, particularly on matters that relate to criminal and family law issues. Sara serves the fifth judicial district from her home county of Clear Creek, throughout all of the firm's mountain territories.

Sara was recently appointed as the municipal prosecutor for the Town of Georgetown, and looks forward to developing her practice, and relationship with the community as a legal advocate, at the CEO firm.

Sara Russell grew up in the small town of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. She obtained both her undergraduate degree in Accounting and her MBA degree from the University of Wisconsin. After working for over a decade as a financial accountant/analyst for two large corporations in the Milwaukee area, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota to attend law school.

Areas Of Practice

During law school Sara was an active volunteer and participant in student organizations, while also working for two years as a law clerk for the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office in the White Collar and Civil divisions. Sara was Vice President of the Elder Law and Estate Planning Society, President of the Joggin’ Mondales, an active member of the Women Law Students Association, and a cast member with the Theatre of the Relatively Talentless (“TORT”).   Her volunteer work helped veterans, homeless, disadvantaged youth and inmate populations throughout Minnesota and even took her to El Paso, Texas over one winter break where she worked with an immigration lawyer for the Asylum Law Project. Sara’s volunteer work with the Minnesota Justice Foundation (“MJF”) and other nonprofit organizations earned her MJF’s Public Service Award for having volunteered over 150 hours during her law school career. During her last semester, Sara was fortunate to work with the Innocence Project of Minnesota to investigate and litigate inmates’ claims of innocence, including the case of Billy Glaze, an alleged serial killer who spent over 25 years in prison despite no physical evidence linking him to the crimes. Sara graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2014.

After law school Sara moved her family to Denver, Colorado and obtained an LL.M. degree in Tax Law from University of Denver Sturm College of Law. She worked in downtown Denver in International Tax for one of the Big Four accounting firms and then with Judicial Arbiter Group before taking, and successfully passing, the Colorado bar exam in 2018. In the summer of 2018 Sara began working as a Deputy District Attorney for the Fifth Judicial District Attorney’s Office. She served as a DDA both in Breckenridge and Georgetown before leaving the office in December 2020. Sara joined Carlson, Edwards, and O’Connor in 2021 and now enjoys serving clients with a variety of legal needs including criminal defense, family law, estate planning, and civil litigation.

The Russell family traded in city living for mountain living in 2017 and Sara now enjoys home life in Idaho Springs with husband, son, and the family dog, Ursula. Sara and her husband, Todd, can be found on downhill skis during most of their free time, but they also have fun hiking, biking, kayaking, off-roading, and appreciating good food and good times with friends and family.
